Training

The successful implementation of a GIS is not only contingent upon data accuracy, but also on proper use of the system. As such, MERI has taken the helm on developing unique training sessions that will enable a wide-array of GIS end users to realize the full utilization of their GIS software.

Novice users tend to be intimidated by the abundance of functionality and screen presence of typical GIS programs. MERI has developed customized environments, in both ArcIMS and ArcReader to allow an ease of transition for new users.

Acclimation and familiarity are the main focus of the initial training sessions. Customized manuals, as opposed to generic manuals, were written with exercises specific to the individual town. Although this adds time to the process, it has, in the long run, proved beneficial in end user training.

A few topics covered by the training sessions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Fundamental of GIS
  • Basic Cartography
  • Navigating through ArcIMS
  • Navigating through ERIS
  • Fundamental of GPS data collection

Sessions are conducted by MERI staff and consist of workbook exercises, tests, and fieldwork (if necessary). MERI staff also serves as technical support for questions or problems that occur outside the realm of the training sessions. In addition, refresher courses will be held bi-annually to ensure that knowledge is reinforced.
